The Catrinaverse

by on January 24, 2013

So there I was, sitting in my Legal History class, listening to a lecture on the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. I was truly interested, honest I was, but in the back of my mind a little plot-gerbil kept running its little wheel.  I’d been tossing around a number of story ideas. Of course I’m still doing Catrina’s quest for Mlrning (the Shovel of Thor!), not to mention Ermingard and Katrina’s own adventures. But I’d been kicking around an idea involving Santa Clause, which was partly inspired by a really fun Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode I saw where Dr. Bashir got to play a James Bond-like character. Then too, I had been thinking about doing a space story, and I had even worked out a name for a character: Kilkenny Speed. I don’t know what he does yet, but he just sounds cool.  And then, suddenly, right around the Judiciary Act of 1801, it hit me. Like Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective, I didn’t know which to choose, so…..I’ll use them all!  Kilkenny Speed, the Spork Brigade, Santa, Captain Happily Married, everyone, they’re all going to be part of one single glorious Catrinaverse.

BAM said the lady, it all came together. And it neatly resolved another dilemma I’d been having. I never quite figured out how to square Catrina: in Space with the Catrina Chronicles themselves. I mean, the Chronicles involve a whole series of blog-post episodes that happen more or less chronologically, and here’s Catrina in Space off on its own. It affected the storyline (Catrina got married, and so on), but it’s still set apart, if you follow me.  But then, shazam, the dilemma resolved. Instead of writing separate Catrina novels, I’m just going to take all the Catrina episodes from now on and put them in print collections.  Sort of like the people who do online comic strips and then release the comics in book form for you to put on your coffee table or something. Thus, continuity is preserved. As preserved as it ever is with Catrina, anyway.

So, all the 57 Catrina stories up till now will be part of what I’m somewhat unoriginally calling “Catrina: Phase 1“.  Starting next Monday, Episode 58 will kick off Catrina: Phase 2, in which Catrina really begins her quest for Mlrning (The Shovel of Thor!). Then at some point this year when that quest concludes, I’ll put Episodes 58-whatever together and you can have them all for your very own. 😛

Anyway, I hope all that made some sort of sense; it did to me in Legal History, anyway. Thanks for reading!
