Poorly Chosen Words

by on March 29, 2013

Before I get into this weekend’s Trifextra challenge, I just want to take a minute and say how very surprised and delighted I was that the editors picked my Rain piece from last week for first place. I was even more surprised because I wrote a good deal of it during a lecture in Legal History. It’s amazing how inspirational a discourse on federal railroad regulation in the 19th century can be. Then again, C.S. Lewis was inspired to write the Screwtape Letters during a lengthy sermon in church, so there’s precedent. Anyway. I am truly grateful to Trifecta. And with that said, here’s this weekend’s entry, which was to write 33 words containing an idiom. I decided to return to the Rainverse: you can find the previous stories here, then here. Enjoy!

“But,” Rain’s sister gasped, “you can’t refuse! Society would collapse! It’s out of the frying pan into the fire!”

Rain glared. She was being sacrificed to a volcano. Fire idioms were singularly inappropriate.

  1. we always say the worst things at the worst times. 🙂 Poor Rain . . . she needs to turn on the waterworks to put out the fire.

    • Indeed. Of course, it’s important to note that she didn’t start the fire. It was always burning since the world’s been turning…

  2. Congrats on your Win 🙂

  3. lmfao I think I’m falling in love with Rain xD

    • I would, but I already like one of my other characters. Not that that’s weird or anything 😛

  4. Your sense of humor is great! Your win was well-deserved- congrats 🙂

    • Thanks! I was quite excited, because I’d gotten third a few times but never first. It was a happy moment. 🙂

  5. Congratulations on your win of the earlier entry. It was very good and so is this.

  6. LOL Love your use of an idiom here. Poor Rain!

  7. Ha! Terrific. Completely inappropriate.

  8. Love this! Great job summarizing the situation and emotions in 33 words! And congrats on your Trifecta win – well done!

    • Thanks! If there’s one thing Trifecta’s taught me, it’s how to cram a lot into a very few words. Fun stuff.

  9. Ha!ha!Yes,very inappropriate! How insensitive Rain’s sister is!

Also, congrats on the win, it was great!

    • which would be another idiom! And one that Rain would probably appreciate more than the fire one. 🙂
